GC Student, Faculty, and Staff Picnic at Wave Hill in Riverdale, NY – Friday, June 27, '03
The Mathematics Program is sponsoring a picnic for all interested GC students, faculty, and staff (and their guests) this coming Friday, June 27, 2003 at Wave Hill in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
Wave Hill is a spectacular public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades; it is an oasis of serenity for all visitors. A non-profit cultural institution located on 28 acres in the northwest part of the Bronx, Wave Hill is dedicated to exploring the interaction between human beings and the natural environment. Wave Hill maintains award-winning gardens and greenhouses; manages an urban woodland; provides environmental education for NYC children, teachers, and over 110,000 visitors annually; offers arts activities for children that strengthen environmental awareness; conducts projects in landscape history and design; and presents exhibitions, readings, concerts, lectures, and workshops that examine the aesthetic response to nature. Wave Hill is operated by an independent non-profit cultural organization; the buildings and grounds are owned by the City of New York.
Directions: Go to Grand Central Terminal (42nd St. between
Vanderbilt and Lexington Aves.) Buy your round-trip ticket (off-peak) to the
Riverdale stop (on the Hudson Line) at any of the windows on the main floor
(cost: $9). Then meet us at the main, round information booth at 11 a.m.; we will catch
the 11:20 a.m. train to the Riverdale station, about a 25 minute ride. We
then have a pleasant 12-minute walk through a beautiful neighborhood until we
arrive at Wave Hill. [Admission is $4; $2 for students with a GC
ID.]

The Wave Hill website is: http://www.wavehill.org.
For directions if you want to meet us there:
http://www.wavehill.org/directions.html. You can bring your own picnic lunch, or buy food there in the Wave Hill Café. We will eat lunch there shortly after we arrive, and will then look around at their flower gardens and greenhouses. There is also a small art museum on the premises. Then we can sit out on the grass or in the wooden Shaker-style chairs that are there, and read or talk. [Bring a book.] People will have free time to do as they like, and then we will arrange to meet back at a central point for the 12-minute walk back to the train station. We are planning to leave together at 4:15 p.m. to catch the 4:36 p.m. train back to Grand Central, arriving at 5:07 p.m. If you can come, please let us know so that we will have an idea of how many people to expect.
