Thursday, April 24th, 2003

(during the spring recess)

for members of the Graduate Center community & their guests

[ Note: This is the rescheduled rain date. ]

When and Where to Meet the Group / Trip Itinerary :

Meet at Penn Station (33rd-32nd Sts. between 7th-8th Aves.) between 9:00 - 9:15 a.m. by the Police booth at the end of the hall in the southwest corner on the main level.  [ Enter Penn Station at 33rd St. & 8th Ave., walk down the stairs, turn right and walk towards the back.]  The cost is only $12.15 roundtrip if you are there by 9:15 a.m. and give cash to the trip coordinator (Rob Landsman, Math Program A.P.O.) who will buy tickets for the group at the group-rate discount (as long as we have at least 10 people).  [ Otherwise - - if you come late and/or want to pay by credit card - - you can buy your own roundtrip ticket at the nearby New Jersey Transit window for the "Northeast Corridor Line" to Princeton Station; the cost will be $16.25 roundtrip.]  We will catch the 9:38 a.m. train, and should arrive at Princeton Station at 10:51 a.m.  [ The train from Penn Station takes us to "Princeton Junction" where we switch to the "Dinky" train for a 4-minute trip to Princeton Station.]  We will be met there by Prof. Bruce Jordan (of Baruch College and the Graduate Center) who lives in Princeton.  We will walk to the Institute for Advanced Study, a "think tank" where Albert Einstein and other famous scientists and mathematicians lived and worked.  Prof. Jordan will show us the grounds and we will take a walk in the woods.  Afterwards we will head to Nassau Street, the main street in downtown Princeton, across the street from the university, for lunch and shopping.  [ Depending on the time, we may walk to Nassau St. or share cabs going there, at a cost of ~$2 per person.]  A list of restaurants will be provided; each member of the tour can pick the restaurant of his/her choice and look in some of the shops.  After about two hours we will meet back at the main gate (at Nassau and Witherspoon streets) of Princeton University where we will tour the university grounds before heading to the station for the train back to Manhattan in the early evening.  [ We will shoot for the 6:28 p.m. returning train from Princeton Station, but depending on how things go, we may catch an earlier or later train. ]

Please email mathematics@gc.cuny.edu (or call 212-817-8530) if you are planning to join us so that we will know how many people to expect.  Hope to see you at Penn Station!
