Mystic, Connecticut, a picturesque
coastal village in southeastern Connecticut, has a long history as a shipbuilding
town and a center of maritime activity. The Mystic Seaport Museum,
founded in 1929, is the largest and most comprehensive maritime museum
in North America. It is an active living history museum with 17 acres
of exhibits portraying coastal life in New England in the 19th century.
Trained members of the museum's staff are stationed throughout their historic
waterfront - - which includes berthed ships, exhibits of art and artifacts,
and nearly forty historic buildings - - to answer questions, demonstrate
traditional skills, and share stories of old New England seafaring days.

Maps and other informative materials will be handed out to participants
upon boarding the bus on the morning of September 22nd.
Our group will meet the chartered coach in front of the Graduate Center at 9am; we will arrive in Mystic around 11:40am. The Museum exhibits are open until 5pm, and the museum grounds until 6pm. You can bring sandwiches with you, or eat at one of the many restaurants at the Seaport or in town, including the famous Mystic Pizza, the inspiration for the Julia Roberts film (1988) by the same name. After eating dinner &/or shopping in the town of Mystic, we will meet back at the bus at 7pm, returning to the Graduate Center around 9:40pm after a full day's outing.
A special event on Sunday, Sept. 22nd will be Mystic Seaport's 5th annual Antique Motor Vehicle Show, entitled "By Land and By Sea." One hundred and thirty antique cars, trucks, and motorcycles, from the turn-of-the-century through 1929, will be exhibited by antique vehicle enthusiasts. Learn about the important connections between land and sea, commerce and transportation. A lively parade of vehicles will conclude the day.
Tickets may be purchased, subject to availability, by coming in person
to the Mathematics Program Office, Rm. 4208, between 10am - 6pm, or by
appointment. You may email ahead, if you wish, to mathematics@gc.cuny.edu.
Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis within the categories
listed below. Only 48 tickets will be sold, the seating capacity of the
chartered bus. Additional individuals who wish to come will be placed
on a waiting list to be contacted later by email or phone if a space should
become available.
Cost: From $20 - $30, depending on your category as listed below. The ticket includes round trip transportation to Mystic Seaport via chartered coach plus admission to the museum. [Note: If you were to go on your own, the cost of admission plus round trip travel from NYC via Amtrak would cost $111.] You may pay for your ticket by cash or by check made out to the "CUNY Graduate Center."
Eligibility: Tickets will be sold in priority order of the categories listed below.
- Category 1: GC students; ticket price = $20.
- Category 2: GC faculty & staff; ticket price = $25. [A limited number of
- tickets have been set aside for GC faculty and staff. Additional persons
- requesting tickets in this category will be placed on a waiting list.]
- Category 3: Other CUNY students; ticket price = $25. [A waiting list will be
- kept; tickets will be sold in this category only if seats remain on the bus after
- selling to categories 1-2 above.]
- Category 4: All others; ticket price = $30.

- remain on the bus after selling to categories 1-3 above.]
Cancellation policy: The trip will be held rain or shine. Unless the event should be canceled by the Graduate Center, tickets are non-refundable. However, anyone who purchases a ticket and then finds that he/she is unable to go should contact the Mathematics Program; we will try to sell your ticket to someone on the waiting list and reimburse you for the ticket price. [Individuals should not resell tickets on their own.]
