is a map, where the star represents the Graduate Center
MAP
HOTELS:
The
Graduate Center is located at 365 Fifth Avenue (on the corner of
Fifth Avenue and 34th St.), near the Empire State Building, in midtown
Manhattan. It is a ten minute walk
from Penn Station (which is on 34th St. and
Eighth Avenue) and a little over a fifteen minute walk
from Grand Central
Station (which is on 42nd St. and Lexington Avenue).
Here's
a list of hotels near the Graduate Center. All are less than a 10
minute
walk from the Graduate Center. As of April 20, all were
showing vacancies for
the nights of May 27, May 29, and May 29.
Keep
in mind that May 29-May 31 is Memorial Day Weekend (most people get Monday
May 31 off), so things might fill up
fast.
We have had guests stay at all of these hotels before except the Howard
Johnson’s and they were all fine. I expect the Howard Johnson’s to be
okay as
well. It is slightly farther than the others from the Graduate Center, though
still less than a 10 minute walk.

TRAVEL:
BY PLANE:
New York is served by three major
airports: LaGuardia and Kennedy, in Queens,
and Newark, in New Jersey. Here is info on getting
from each to the Graduate
Center.
LAGUARDIA:
A taxi to the Graduate Center area will run about $20-$25 plus
tip.
There is also a bus
called New York Air Service Bus that will take you to Penn
Station (a few blocks
from the Graduate Center) or to Grand Central (slightly
farther to the Graduate Center but less far on the bus).
It costs $10.
It
is also possible to take the subway: You can also take the M60 bus to 116 St.
and Broadway (where
Columbia University) and take the 1/9 subway to Penn Station
or the Q33 to
Roosevelt Avenue (in Queens) and then take the F train to 34th St.
(the Q33 to the F to
34th is probably a little bit quicker). Either way will
cost you $4. I
do not recommend this unless you are already familiar with the
New
York subway system.
See
the websites
http://www.ny.com/transportation/airports/LGA.html
and

for more information
on all these options
KENNEDY:
A taxi to the Graduate Center will cost $35 plus tolls plus
tip.
You can also take Air
Train to Jamaica Station of the Long Island Railroad and
take that to Penn
Station. This runs about $12. See
http://www.airtrainjfk.com/airtrain/
You can also take a
New York Air Service Bus to Penn Station or Grand Central
for $13. See
http://www.ny.com/nyc-cgi-
bin/frame?url=http://www.nyairportservice.com&frame=/frame/travel.html
NEWARK: A taxi will cost $40-$50 plus
tolls plus tip. You can also take Air
Train to New Jersey
Transit, Amtrak directly to Penn Station or take Air Train
to a New Jersey
Transit train to Newark Penn Station (not the same as Penn
Station Manhattan)
and catch a Path train to 33rd St. and 6th Avenue (Manhattan)
from there. See
http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/monorailframe.htm
for more
details. Cost varies depending which exact way you
come.
There is also a $12
bus called Olympia Airport Express which will take you to
Penn Station.

for more details
BY TRAIN:
Nearly
all trains in and out of New York go through Penn Station (34th and
8th -
- about a ten minute
walk from the Graduate Center) or Grand Central (42nd and
Lexington -- just over a fifteen minute
walk from the Graduate Center).
BY CAR:
Note:
parking in Manhattan can be very hard. Be sure
to ask your hotel about
parking if you choose
to drive.
