PHYS 85900: Scientific Career Management:
Strategies for Enhancing Job Prospects and Career Opportunities for Ph.D.
Scientists and Engineers
Prof. B. Schwartz & Ms. Carol Wood
Mon., 11:45AM - 1:45PM
0 cr., Rm. TBA
Course Outline:
There has been a fundamental and structural change
in the funding and career opportunities for traditional-type employment for
Ph.D. scientists and engineers. New and changing opportunities exist in
academia, government, and industry, however, the new Ph.D. graduate must be
better prepared to meet and understand the employer's needs and requirements.
This course will enable participants to enhance and enlarge their employment
prospects by covering such topics as skills assessment, resume preparation,
interview techniques, networking, the unlisted job market and non-traditional
careers especially in the newer technologies, small companies and the business
world. Data on recent employment patterns from the processional societies will
be presented and critiqued. Special guest lecturers from various employment
sectors, (including some recent CUNY Ph.D.s) will describe their education, job
search, current employment and strategies for the new Ph.D. graduate.
Course Meetings:
The Course will meet in fall 2005 on Mondays from
11:45 AM to 1:45 PM at the Graduate Center. The format will be informal with
considerable discussion, preparation of various types of resumes, taped
practice interviews, networking, etc. Books and relevant articles covering
different aspects of career management will be distributed free of charge to the
students. Refreshments will be served for each class.
Instructors:
Professor Brian Schwartz, Vice President for
Research and Sponsored Programs and Professor of Physics, The Graduate Center.
Professor Schwartz has published widely on the subject of scientific career
opportunities and has given dozens of invited talks at universities and
professional society meetings.
Ms. Carol Wood, Career Consultant, Baruch College

empower and enlarge their job seeking skills and opportunities. The course
Scientific Career Management had been offered the last ten years and has
received national recognition by the NSF National Science Board and has served
well over 250 CUNY Ph.D. students.
