STUDENT/FACULTY APPALACHIAN TRAIL HIKE
The Math Program will be holding an Appalachian
Trail hike every year for students, faculty, and their
guests, either in the spring or fall of the year. The first
hike was held on March 23rd, 2002. The group will meet by
the circular information booth in Grand Central Terminal
in the morning, and take the train together to the Appalachian
Trail station. The roundtrip fare is $17.50. The train takes
approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. Instructions for arriving
by car will also be provided. We will hike from the train
station to the "Cat Rocks" and back; the entire hike (including
the return to the station) is 6.4 miles in length.
The trail covers a variety of terrain, from grassy areas
through "swamps" and into deep woods. We need to bring our
lunch with us, as there are no 24-hour diner/restaurants
in the area; it is not Manhattan! We'll stop to eat after
we have climbed to the summit. Participants might want to
bring a camera as well, as there are some nice views along
the way. Most people will probably find the hike to be challenging,
but not overly taxing. Some photos from the spring hike
have been placed on the Math Program bulletin board. An
email with full details will be sent to all Program participants
before the next hike.
