STUDENT/FACULTY TRIP TO ELLIS ISLAND
AND LIBERY ISLAND

Sunday Morning, May 2, 2004 [rain or shine]

The new DSC-chartered “Culture Club” is arranging a trip to Liberty Island and Ellis Island in New York Harbor.  We will spend a half-hour on Liberty Island where we can see the Statue of Liberty (from the outside) and get great views of Manhattan.  We will then take the next ferry to Ellis Island to visit the Museum of Immigration.  The Ellis Island Museum has many interesting exhibits on the history of U.S. immigration; the island is now a United States National Park.

The cost of the trip is only $8, which includes the (round-trip) ferry to Liberty and Ellis Islands from the Battery located at the southern tip of Manhattan.

Directions by subway to the closest stop in lower Manhattan:

Take either the R train to the Whitehall Station, the 1 train to the South Ferry station, or the 4 or 5 train to the Bowling Green Station. Walk through Battery Park to Castle Clinton.  Meet the group in front of Castle Clinton at 9:30 a.m. (9:45 a.m. at the latest) on Sunday morning, May 2nd.  Keep in mind that the subway can be slow on a Sunday morning, so please allow extra time when you leave in the morning.  We will catch the 10 a.m. ferry to Liberty Island, and then the next ferry from Liberty to Ellis Island.  Ellis Island is open until 5pm.

If you would like to pay in advance, contact the Interim Culture Club President, Efua Okoh, at eokoh@gc.cuny.edu and we will purchase your ticket for you and have it for you when you arrive at Castle Clinton.  [Otherwise, you will need to stand in line there and buy your own ticket.]

All members of the GC community and their guests are invited. Meet people from other Graduate Center departments!  Note: Avoid bringing large backpacks and bags, since all bags are subject to search, which will slow us down.  Cameras, however, are recommended for taking great views from lower Manhattan, from aboard the ferry, and on Liberty and Ellis Islands.

We hope that you will be able to join us on May 2nd.  Please email eokoh@gc.cuny.edu to R.S.V.P. if you would like to come on the trip. If you will be paying in advance, so that you won't have to wait on line, bring your $8 to Rm. 4208; ask for Rob, who will give you a receipt.

Hope to see you on May 2nd!
